Wretched and tense

Phyllis Vansittart Neale suffered a relapse.

18 December 1918

Rang up early, heard good night & better. Half an hour later they rang up & said she was worse. I rushed off in motor. Found she had rigor, another patch pneumonia – temp: up. Stayed till 5. They wanted to get her ready for night so I left. Edith gone to B[ear] P[lace] so I alone at flat. Felt wretched & tense, most painful.

Off to France in a few days

The Vansittart Neales were friends of the Nicholl family who lived at Bear Place, Hare Hatch. Charles Nicholl, a solicitor in his late 30s, served with the Oxfordshire Yeomanry in France.

Phyllis & I motored to Bear Place. Charlie & N there. He off to France in few days: 2nd in command of his old regiment, become a Major again.

Not many at sale for wounded Frenchmen

Sydney Spencer was ill – just in time for Christmas at home.

I go home on 12 days sick leave.

Not every effort to raise money to support the war was well attended.

Bubs & I went to Bear Place for Dottie’s sale for French wounded. Glee singers from Windsor & Eton. Not many people there.

Whist with the Wargrave wounded

Florence Vansittart Neale and her sister in law Edith went to visit the wounded and play cards with them.

E & I off 2 o’clock to Bear Place for whist drive with Wargrave wounded. Won a handkerchief….

Fresh move on. Took Le Gars.

Looking cheerful on leave

Florence Vansittart Neale and her sister in law went over to Reading to see Florences’ nurse daughter. Department store Heelas is now the Reading branch of John Lewis.

Constance & I to Reading. Saw hospital. Gave Bubs tea at Heelas & called Bear Place. Found Ken back for week’s leave. Looking very well & cheerful!
