The War Charities Act

Berkshire County Council’s Finance and General Purposes Committee was ready to implement a new Act of Parliament regulating the multitude of war-related charities which has sprung up.

WAR CHARITIES ACT, 1916

The provisions of the War Charities Act, 1916, prohibit any War Charity – as defined in the Act – from making any appeal to the public for donations or subscriptions in money or in kind, or from raising or attempting to raise money by promoting any bazaar, sale, entertainment or exhibition unless registered or exempted from registration by the Registration Authority. The County Council are the Registration Authority for the area of the County, excluding municipal boroughs and urban districts.

The matter being urgent, the following committee has been appointed to exercise the powers of the Council in relation to the registration and exemption of charities…

The committee have dealt with several applications for certificates of registration and exemption.
