Awful, awful slaughter

The London Scottish Regiment was the first Territorial unit to see action in the war, on the Messines ridge as part of the 1st Battle of Ypres. Florence Vansittart Neale of Bisham was appalled by the losses they faced. The Lucas-Tooth family (wealthy brewers) was one which was to see all its sons lost in the war.

Foggy. Train ½ hour late. I & girls to London… All trains left London with blinds down till 10 miles outside.
